On Sunday, President Klaus Iohannis visited the DSP call center in Bucharest, at the National Arena. He thanked the volunteers who helped take the calls, saying the DSPs were “totally out of date” due to a lack of staff. The head of state spoke about the vaccination campaign that is being prepared and expressed his hope that the pandemic will be under control by the summer of next year.
Klaus Iohannis said after the visit that the measures taken by the authorities are starting to work, as the number of new infections continues to rise.
“It is increasingly evident that the restrictive measures that the Government and the authorities have taken are beginning to give the first results. The number of new infections per day has not increased for at least two weeks, so we are on a plateau. But sadly, we see that hospitals are becoming increasingly crowded. However, too many sick Romanians end up in serious or very serious condition in hospitals, “said Klaus Iohannis.
The head of state called for solidarity with the front-line personnel, who face the most difficult cases.
“Let us all be in solidarity with the hundreds and thousands of volunteers who work, with the thousands of doctors, medical personnel, who work enormously, enormously, so that Romania can overcome this pandemic.” I believe that we are really obliged to show solidarity with them and respect the rules that are imposed, because, in this way, we really manage to save lives and we will achieve, if we respect these measures, have vacations without additional restrictions ”, he added. .
Klaus Iohannis spoke about the vaccination strategy announced by the government and the vaccines that are already beginning to be transported, pending final authorization for their use.
“The government has approved the vaccination strategy. It has already been made public. The Minister of Health has already started to publicly explain how things will go. These public explanations will continue. Through the international media he has surely learned that the first tranches of Vaccines are already effectively prepared and we hope to have them here in Romania early next year, and start with the medical staff, including student volunteers. We spoke with the minister to recruit them from the medical staff, so they can continue the work they do with a lot of dedication and so that they can continue their training, even at the patient’s bedside ”.
“After we finish the vaccination campaign, let’s end this pandemic. Maybe by next summer we can end this pandemic,” the president added.
Insufficient staff in DSPs
Klaus Iohannis thanked the volunteers who helped take over the phone calls from DSP Bucharest, showing that the health departments were out of date at first and some are still there due to lack of staff.
“Several hundred volunteers, a total of 500 volunteers, work here and provide effective support to DSP activity. Now I have met, on this tour, many people, both young and strong. (…) Many are volunteers. , medical students, and I really appreciated this participation. I congratulate you and I am convinced that you will be very good doctors after finishing your studies. Your participation is already extraordinary. I also met resident doctors, school doctors and DSP doctors. (… ) I discovered that all the volunteers are very well prepared. They have a calm, very professional approach and not only manage to obtain and give information, but also manage to calm people who, of course, have their problems, if they are sick and above all if they are infected with this new virus, ”said Klaus Iohannis.
He recalled that DSPs generally have a big problem with staff shortages.
“The DSPs were totally out of date at the beginning, some are still there due to lack of personnel. That is why I appreciate the work of these volunteers,” said the president.
Bucharest continues to report more than 1,000 coronavirus cases in 24 hours, the first in the country, double that of Constața County, which ranks second.
