The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, met in Brussels with the Attorney General of the European Prosecutor’s Office, Laura Codruța Kovesi. Maia Sandu says she wants to work with the European institution to push for reforms in the judicial system in Moldova.
The President of the Republic of Moldova announced on Facebook that he had a meeting on Sunday with the Chief Prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, Laura Codruța Kövesi. The discussion took place in Brussels.
“Today, in Brussels, I had a meeting with Laura Codruța Kovesi, Chief Prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. We discussed the need to promote reforms in the judicial system in the Republic of Moldova. We also expressed our mutual interest in establishing a collaborative relationship between the European Prosecutor’s Office and anti-corruption institutions in the Republic of Moldova. It is a first step to initiate and carry out joint activities in the fight against smuggling and money laundering, “says Maia Sandu in the message posted on Facebook.
Maia Sandu took office on December 24, and the fact that Brussels is one of her first overseas destinations indicates a shift in focus from her predecessor in office, Igor Dodon, considered pro-Russian. On Monday, Maia Sandu will meet with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Maya Sandu’s first visit abroad since she was president was in Kiev.
