Japanese health experts warn that the country faces the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, in a context in which a record number of cases has been reported again: 1,645 people have been infected in the last 24 hours in the Japanese archipelago, according to the press. local listed by dpa and Agerpres.
The count, which includes a record 236 new cases on the northern island of Hokkaido, surpassed the previous record for daily cases (1,596 infections) on Aug. 7, Kyodo News reported. The recent increases “can be considered the third wave of coronavirus,” Toshio Nakagawa, president of the Japan Medical Association, said at a press conference on Wednesday, when 1,543 new cases were reported in the territory of the Japanese archipelago.
Japan emerged from a state of emergency in most of the 47 prefectures in mid-May. The country faced a second wave of the epidemic in August.
In a press conference on Thursday, Economic Revitalization Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said there was no immediate need to declare another state of national emergency.
However, the minister said Japan may need to impose restrictions on economic activities if the situation worsens.
Japan has so far reported 114,400 infections with the new coronavirus and 1,884 deaths associated with COVID-19, according to the Kyodo news agency.
