Italian doctors: the mortality of COVID-19 patients could be cut in half. What is the procedure

A group of doctors in Bologna conducted a study showing what happens in the body of COVID-19 patients who lose the fight against the disease.

With high-precision diagnosis and proper treatment, mortality can be cut in half, research says.

The study was conducted on 301 patients at the Sant’Orsola Polyclinic in Bologna and was written by specialists from several Italian hospitals in various fields: resuscitation, pulmonology, radiology, oncology and medical statistics, according to www.nurse24.it.

Research shows that the virus can affect both components of the lungs: both the alveoli responsible for absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide, as well as the capillaries, the blood vessels in which the exchange between carbon dioxide and oxygen occurs.

When the virus attacks only the alveoli or only the capillaries, mortality is 20%.

However, when the virus affects both the alveoli and the capillaries, the probability that the patient will not resist the fight against the disease is 60%.

Therefore, patients who have this “double damage” are less likely to live. According to Italian doctors, in a lung examination of the patient with COVID it can be seen that patients are at risk (if lung compliance is less than 40 and the value of D-dimers is greater than 1800, says the team from Bologna).
