President Klaus Iohannis made a press release at the Cotroceni Palace, once Romania entered a state of alert.

Summary of the statements made by the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis:

– We are at the end of two difficult months, in which most of you have strictly observed the restrictions, have stayed in homes, have completely changed your life. Through a national effort, we were able to stop the rapid spread of the epidemic. Dear Romanians, you are heroes, thank you.

We can say with total certainty: together we save lives.

We must continue to be equally strong and united in the coming months, because the fight with COVID is far from over. The battle that started in February will continue for a long time. Without these measures, the quarantine of some localities, the closure of schools, the number of victims would have been much higher.

– At the end of the state of emergency, we have 16,247 cases of coronavirus, with 245 new cases, showing a slightly decreasing trend. There were 9,053 cases cured, 225 patients are on ATI.

– Currently, the testing capacity has reached more than 10,000 tests per day. So far 277,804 tests have been performed. Romania, unfortunately, was very little prepared for this crisis. We did not find all the materials in the state reserve and managed to buy everything we needed in a short time.

– The unprecedented situation put a ruthless mirror in front of us. The most important reform that Romania needs is the reconstruction of the state. It is mandatory to start the restart to develop the country.

– We also face a lack of legislation. In 3 decades, coherent legislation has not been built for the state to deal with a widespread epidemic. In parliament, old and retrograde politicians began to tear down the modest resources we have at their disposal, they were ready to make the state of alert inoperable..

– We have seen the deficiencies of the state, but also that the greatest challenges can be overcome if the Government and the President work as a team. Starting tomorrow we enter a new stage, but the cessation of the state of emergency is not equivalent to the end of the epidemic.

– The National Committee for Alert Situations today will declare a state of alert and will take all measures. There will be no 3 days without rules and restrictions, we have a legal framework in force and based on this, all decisions will be made so that even in the next 3 days we maintain all the necessary rules.

– If the situation worsens, I will not hesitate to re-declare a state of emergency. Let us not compromise all that we have accomplished so far with great sacrifices. No one can say exactly when we will overcome this pandemic, but it is up to each of us to make it happen as soon as possible.
