President Klaus Iohannis said on Monday that a center-right coalition would crystallize after the parliamentary elections, which could propose a government.

Full statement from President Klaus Iohannis:

“Good night!

The elections are over and I can draw the first conclusions.

Let me, for the first time, thank everyone who left the house, went to the polling place, and voted. I guarantee that every vote will be counted and every vote counts!

At the same time, however, we must be very honest: turnout was low and it is very clear that there are many Romanians who did not receive enough information about these elections, or are simply dissatisfied with me, the parties, the whole. political class or certain measures that have been taken.

I see these things and it is important for all politicians to see these things, analyze them and meet Romanians who did not go to the polls for various reasons. These reasons need to be clarified and I am very determined that in the next period, together with the government that will be formed, we will consider all these issues with the utmost seriousness.

The election results show that there is no clear winner of this election. And if we look at the results that are currently called provisional, but almost all the votes were counted, we see that the National Liberal Party in 2016 had obtained 20%, now it has obtained 25%, so a clear increase. USR, for its part, together with PLUS, obtained 8% in 2016, while they increased to 15%, obviously an increase. PSD, which had obtained 45% in 2016, fell dramatically to 29%.

Therefore, it is clear, if we collect these results, that the center-right, center-right parties together obtained more than 50% of the validly cast votes. And I can honestly tell you that that was my goal and that’s why I had to express myself a little more in public in recent weeks.

In this way, the PSD can finally, after a whole cycle of elections – European Parliament, referendum, presidential – the PSD can remain outside the political decision.

Now what’s next? A center-right coalition is already rapidly crystallizing, which may propose a coalition government. In just a few days, I will convene consultations with the parties that will meet in the new Parliament, consultations to find the best solution for Romania.

The new government that is formed will manage the necessary measures in the pandemic, will urgently present long-awaited and many times postponed reform measures, will manage the vaccination campaign and, certainly, in the shortest time, will present a budget project for the year 2021, along with how the European money will be attracted.

Thank you and good health! “

2020 parliamentary elections

On Sunday night, after the polls closed, the smiles quickly disappeared at the NLP headquarters. After a whole day in which Ludovic Orban coordinated the mobilization to vote from his office, the Liberals came in second place, with just over 25%.

Even so, Ludovic Orban spoke about a future NLP government.

After the vote counting, these elections produced several surprises. With about 15 percent in the polls, the USR PLUS Alliance is ready to take over. But the big surprise is GOLD, The Alliance for the Union of Romanians, a new Christian party, which militates, among other things, for the union of Bessarabia with Romania.

From now on, negotiations for the formation of a majority begin. Since no party won more than 50% of the vote, alliances must be formed to appoint a new government.
