Former Romanian player and champion with CFR Cluj, De Zerbi revealed that experience in League 1 convinced him to follow the coach’s path.

“In Romania I changed my perspective, because there were players from all over the world, with a completely different football perspective than ours, both in training methodology and in tactics. That is where I thought coaching could be my path.

De Zerbi, a former Napoli player, played for two seasons at CFR Cluj, where he won two titles and a Romanian Cup.
In 2013, after a short experience in Trento, the former midfielder retired and began his coaching career. Darfo Boario, Foggia, Palermo and Benevento were the clubs that De Zerbi prepared before taking charge of Sassuolo, in 2018.
