Hungarian authorities began vaccinating against the coronavirus with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine of medical sector employees on Saturday, a day earlier than in most European Union countries, Agerpres reports, citing Reuters.

Hungary received the first shipment of coronavirus vaccine on Saturday morning, and the doses are enough to vaccinate 4,875 people, the public agency MTI reported. The vaccines were transported to Budapest with police escort.

“We have started vaccinating medical personnel according to a pre-established plan,” a government spokesman said in response to questions from Reuters.

The first vaccines are delivered at the main anti-COVID-19 center in Budapest, the Del-Pest Central Hospital, and in the afternoon other doses will arrive at another major hospital in Budapest, the MTI reported.

As of Sunday, many EU countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Portugal and Spain, plan to start mass vaccination.
