As of September 1, Hungary closes its borders to all foreign citizens. The measure affects Romanians who have booked vacations in the neighboring country, now forced to cancel them.
The good thing is that the transit will not suffer: those who go to work, tourists who have to go to other countries or carriers can go to special destinations of color, with proof of this.
Gergely Gulyás, spokesman for the Government of Hungary: “As of September 1, foreigners will no longer be able to enter Hungarian territory, except in special and justified cases.“.
This is how the announcement sounded that set authorities across Europe on fire. The decision to close Hungary’s borders has worried travel agencies. Which, however, due to the pandemic, have fewer and fewer clients.
“Whoever had tickets in Hungary will be transferred to another period, because the Hungarians understood …“.
Above all, they feared that the neighboring state would invariably be a point on the routes that ours follows to reach the West.
In Austria and Germany, for example. And bypassing Hungary would have involved a colossal effort, other tolls, or simply risks.
However, both tourists and freight carriers, military or humanitarian convoys have learned that they can transit through Hungarian territory as before.
Diana Iluț, president of the Northwest Region of ANAT: “I can walk through those colors that I generally know. You must provide proof of this transit. Either the boarding plane ticket from Budapest airport, or proof of a voucher or documents showing that they have booked accommodation in other countries.“.
In order not to be confused, the Romanian Foreign Minister discussed the issue over the phone with his Hungarian counterpart.
MUCH: “After discussion, confirmation was obtained that the transit of Romanian citizens through Hungary, respectively the access of Romanian citizens – cross-border workers will not be affected.”.
Hungary, one of the countries least affected by Covid-19
The decision to close the borders was explained by Hungarian officials in terms of import infections.
Gergely Gulyás, government spokesperson: “Most of the new infections are cases imported from abroad. The pandemic poses a threat to the economy, employment and the start of the new school year“.
Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary: “The point is that we must prevent the virus from entering the country. That is why we have ordered strict border protection measures.“.
The total number of cases in Hungary since the start of the pandemic is close to 6,000. 15 times fewer cases than in Romania.
Hungary is at the bottom of the list in terms of the number of cases and has the fourth lowest number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
