A state employee would make any other employee in Romania envious. Aurelia Surulescu, member of the Board of Directors of the Romanian Highway Authority and head of the Administration, Correspondence, Archives and Transport Service of ARR, received in 2019 income of almost 1 million lei, that is, almost 18,000 euros per month . That is, more than 51 minimum wages and more than 14,000 euros more than the president of Romania.

Aurelia Surulescu was a machinist, graduated from industrial baccalaureate and medical school and also worked as a typist and documentalist at a hospital, before becoming communications chief at the Sector 6 City Council. After graduating from the Faculty of Biotera in 2000 and obtaining a master’s degree in security and terrorism, he arrived in 2012 at the Romanian Highway Authority.

According to the declaration of interests, Aurelia Surulescu is vice president of the Social Democratic Women’s Organization, president of Sector 6 of the OFSD and vice president of sector 6 of the PSD.

In the wealth declaration, Aurelia Surulescu approved the income collected in 2019 of 714,000 lei of ARR where she is head of service, to which is added the compensation of the president of the Board and member of the Board of Directors – more than 160,000 lei and 144,000 lei collected also from the Highway Authority for “professional skills evaluator”. In total, almost 900,000 lei were collected in one year.

Positions in the Highway Authority, political sinecuras

In recent years, various characters have been under the leadership of the Highway Authority, some of whom have no experience and have been appointed to the party.

ARR President Mihai Alecu, appointed early last year by former Transport Minister Lucian Bode, is the son of the mayor of Odobe PSDti PSD. Previously, he worked as head of service in the State Inspection for Road Transport Control.

Both deputy CEOs came to the party line. Florian Meluș Coman, who takes care of The Department of Highway Safety and Licensing was a local councilor for NLP in Sighișoara. According to the wealth statement, he also conducted an ARR audit, including for the department where he was appointed.

The other deputy director general, Ionel Vetu, who looks after Economic, Legal and Administratively, he is also a member of the party. According to the declaration of interests, he is a member of the PNL Ialomița County Political Bureau. His wife also works at ARR.
