Tourists with a vaccination certificate could travel more easily without fear of being quarantined in the European Union.
It is currently a project debated in Brussels by member leaders. The initiative has strong support from states whose economies are based on tourism, but also from hundreds of airlines.
All Member States agree that a vaccination certificate is medically welcome, but have not agreed on whether immunized people can travel within the Union without a PCR test and without quarantine.
Greece, Spain or Portugal are pushing for the swift adoption of a vaccination certificate or passport. This month a first step has already been taken between the Greek and Israeli governments, which have signed an agreement to ease travel restrictions for those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
The initiative is also supported by the International Air Transport Association, which includes 290 airlines, which lost $ 118 billion last year. IATA offers passengers a free application that integrates all the necessary measures for an airplane trip in the context of the pandemic.
Anyone who wants to fly on vacation can perform all the necessary steps directly on their mobile phone. The application is installed on any smartphone and works in 4 steps:
First of all, you can check the travel conditions for the chosen destination. And if you need a covid test or vaccine, you can also find the list of covid19 test / vaccination centers in the application and you can program yourself according to the flight date.
Step three, you receive the test results or the vaccination certificate also in the application and can access them at any time for control. The last step, the application allows you to upload a digital version of your passport and you can manage all your travel documents so that your passage through the airport is contactless.
Anca Apahidean, IATA: “The application is ready in pilot form and will be tested next month by two airlines, with two medical institutions from two different countries. It is being tested for two weeks, then it is free for everyone.”
European leaders must also find solutions for special cases if they want to approve a vaccination passport. We are talking about families traveling with minors who cannot yet be vaccinated or who have had COVID, have been cured and have natural immunity, so they are no longer vaccinated.
