Marcel Ciolacu spoke about the possibility of postponing the elections during a visit to Suceava, without first discussing with colleagues from the territory or with other political leaders. “I think that if the elections were merged, the risk of exposure of the population would be much lower. Normally it should be a discussion provoked by the Government, not by the Parliament, with the Parliament, transparent, without any problem, to see what is better for the Romanians, not for the NLP or for the president, how the future government wants to be formed ” Ciolacu said.
The PSD leader noted that the elections can be postponed because the ballots have not yet been printed. But procedurally it would be quite difficult, as Parliament would have to pass two bills in the next two weeks: one to change the date of the elections and the other to extend the terms of local elected officials, as they expire on 1 November 2020.
“A ridiculous idea”
Ciolacu’s position is not shared by the other great party in Parliament, the PNL, but not by the elected PSD. Party sources told “Adevărul” that the mayors of the municipalities have repeatedly told them that they no longer want a possible delay in organizing the elections. “This idea of the PSD is ridiculous, just as the vote of no confidence was ridiculous,” said Prime Minister Ludovic Orban. Likewise, the head of government specified that the Social Democrats are trying to postpone the elections because they would like to recover from the percentages, since they are quoted with only 20% as the intention to vote.
