Former Polish President Lech Walesa claims he is bankrupt and unable to give gifts this year, dpa reports on Friday, according to Agerpres.

“No one will receive gifts from me this year because I am bankrupt,” the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize winner told Polsatnews.

Walesa, 77, explained that although he had traveled extensively and earned money from lectures in recent years, those times are long gone. He thus referred to the pandemic with the new coronavirus.

“There were times when I had money, then I spent it. Now I’m here with empty pockets,” said the former leader of the Solidaridad union (1980-1990).

Walesa played a key role in the fall of the communist regime in Poland, later becoming the president of the Central European country between 1990 and 1995.
