A dog waited for a month for its owner, who was sick with Covid, in front of the hospital, without knowing that he had died, in a city in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Doctors named him Covito, for the disease that took his master’s life.

The man was hospitalized in November in a hospital in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, after falling ill with Covid-19. The dog remained in front of the hospital for a month, unaware that the man lost the battle with the virus five days after hospitalization, La Stampa writes.

His presence did not go unnoticed by the medical staff: doctors and nurses decided to name him Covito, in honor of Covid, and were in charge of providing him with food, water and caresses.

The head of the hospital’s Covid-19 department loved Covito very much: “He gave us many moments of happiness during this difficult period and won the hearts of all the hospital employees.”

Covito’s story crossed Mexican borders and reached Kendra Hernández, a representative of an animal rights association in Texas. The woman went to Tamaulipas to take Covito, vaccinate him, and look for a new family.

For now, Covito lives with 43 other animals, dogs and cats, and is waiting for a family to adopt him.
