The vaccine was 90% effective when a half dose was administered in the first inoculation, followed, after one month, by a full dose, based on data from the final phase trials conducted in the UK and Brazil.
Another variant tested was the administration of two full doses one month apart, with an efficacy of 62%. Both results are statistically relevant, the company said.
“The effectiveness and safety of the vaccine confirms that it will be particularly effective against Covid-19 and will have an immediate impact on this public medical emergency,” Pascal Soriot, CEO of AstraZeneca, said in a press release.
According to the data presented, none of those vaccinated in clinical trials was hospitalized and did not have any serious form of the disease.
The company also announced that it is making great progress in the manufacturing process and will be able to produce 3 billion doses next year.
Matt Hancock, the British health minister, said it was “great news”: “These data show that the correct dose of vaccine can be up to 90% effective.”
