Hans Kluge, WHO’s regional director for Europe, sent a discouraging message on Thursday.
“Europe represents 28% of world cases and 26% of accumulated deaths in the region,” he said.
“Last week, Europe recorded more than 29,000 new deaths from Covid-19. That means one person dies every 17 seconds.”
Over the past week, deaths increased 18 percent, he said.
However, there are some promising signs that the actions governments have taken to try to stop the spread of the virus are working.
The number of weekly coronavirus cases in Europe fell last week for the first time in three months.
Weekly new infections fell 10% to 1.8 million. Dr. Kluge suggested that the strict blockades imposed in several European countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Spain, have an effect.
Europe was the continent with the most cases, registering here 46% of all infections detected worldwide.
But the number of new infections in Europe fell 10% compared to last week, due to the “strengthening of social and public health measures,” according to the WHO.
Despite the decline in the number of new infections, the number of deaths has risen to more than 29,000-49% of all COVID-19 deaths worldwide.
The largest increase in the number of new cases was recorded in Austria, which recorded a 30% increase compared to the previous week.
