The European Commission warned on Wednesday that it will take legal action against member states that violate EU law, wanting to force its citizens to accept coupons instead of returning money for canceled flights or vacations, Agerpres writes, citing DPA.
In late April, a group of 12 EU member states, including Romania, called on the European Commission to suspend rules requiring airlines to return all money to passengers on canceled flights, saying airlines should be allowed to offer vouchers for subsequent flights in return.
The EU executive is sending “encouragement” letters to all 27 member states urging them to respect passenger rights and also presenting ways to make coupons more attractive to passengers, European Transport Commissioner said on Wednesday, Adina Valean. .
If the respective member states do not implement the existing rules, according to which passengers are entitled to receive their money, then the Commission is “determined” to take legal action, Vălean said.
Previously, the European Commission’s Vice President, Margrethe Vestager, said the EU executive was about to initiate infringement proceedings against a group of member states that violate the EU consumer rights law.
“The starting point is that Europeans are entitled to a refund if they wish. Please point. And we hope that those Member States will correct the situation immediately, otherwise we will move on to the next stage,” said Vestager, who is also commissioner of Competition.
European Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean said she was “surprised” by her competition colleague’s comments.
