China congratulated U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on Friday on his victory over Donald Trump more than a week after the presidential vote. “We respect the choice of the American people,” Beijing officials said, according to the Associated Press.
“We respect the choice of the American people. Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a news conference.
So far, Trump has refused to accept defeat, but many world leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have already congratulated Biden on his victory.
Among the states that have yet to send congratulations to Biden are Russia, Mexico and Brazil, which are waiting for the votes to be confirmed by the Electoral College next month.
“We believe it is fair to wait for the official election results to be announced,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.
Joe Biden won the election in Arizona, one of the states that has yet to complete the counting of votes in the Nov. 3 election, CNN and the Edison Research Institute forecast, according to the latest announced results.
This would mean that the former vice president gets 11 more electoral votes, moving further away from current president Donald Trump. It reaches a score of 290 electoral votes, since 270 votes were needed to win the election.
Also read Trump’s coup. There is no evidence that the votes have been lost or changed, say several election officials.
