Almost a week after the official car suffered a traffic accident, the Minister of Transport, Lucian Bode, gives the first public explanations, stating that “the SPP driver is solely responsible for the route and for taking the dignitary to his destination”. “The dignitary does not have the right to tell the driver to go higher or slower, to use or not the acoustic and light signals,” said Bode, noting that at the time of the accident he was “resting” in the back seat.

Minister’s explanations:

  • He wasn’t driving, he was a passenger in the back seat. The car and the driver belong to SPP, they are on a mission with the acoustic and light media in accordance with the law.
  • The dignitary does not have the right to tell the driver to go higher or slower, to use the acoustic and light signals or not.
  • The dignitary tells the driver the destination and the time he wants to arrive. The SPP driver is solely responsible for the route and destination of the dignitary. Circumstances of the accident on Sunday August 30: I traveled the distance Zalău – Bucharest hundreds of times as a driver or passenger. I have a driver’s license for 20 years and I was never denied. I’ve been driving a million miles for a long time. Between Zalău and Bucharest there are 530 km of which 246 are motorway km. The incident occurred around 6 in the afternoon, when I still had 130 km to go to Bucharest, of which 110 on the highway.
  • I told SPP that the final destination is the government headquarters and that the time I anticipate arriving is at 8 pm We had no reason to hurry. Absolutely every trip I made I sat in the back seat where I could read, work or rest. I have never been concerned with how the SPP employee works. For a very simple reason: until Sunday they drove flawlessly. In the moments before the unfortunate incident, he was resting, he had already traveled four and a half hours ”.

The minister specified that in most trips he uses a car from the Ministry of Transport not equipped with acoustic and lighting installations.

“I deeply regret this incident, I will continue to move from one end of the country to the other, respecting traffic regulations,” added Bode, while the traces of Sunday’s accident are still visible on the minister’s face. He was hit in the nose.
