At least seven people have been killed by a man armed with a knife in northeast China, the BBC reported, citing local media.

Seven other people were injured in the attack, which took place in Kaiyuan, a small town in Liaoning province.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, the police arrested a suspect, but the motive for the attack is unknown.

Attacks of this type of violence are quite rare in China, but they have occurred in recent years, being committed by people with mental illnesses or people who wanted to take revenge on officials or acquaintances.

The suspect in Kaiyuan began attacking people at random around 8 a.m. local time, writes the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

Police said an officer was injured during the confrontation with the suspect. Details of the victims were not made public.

A witness told the South China Morning Post that the attack began near a school and that most of the victims appeared to be middle-aged or elderly women.
