“There were up to 70 dead in Tchoma Bangou and 30 dead in Zaroumadareye,” said Almond Hassane, mayor of Tondikiwindi, managing the two villages attacked by “terrorists aboard a hundred motorcycles” on Sunday.

The mayor said 25 people were injured, some of whom were evacuated to Niamey and Ouallam for treatment.

Hassane also said that to attack the two villages (7 km apart), the attackers split into two columns: while one was attacking Zaroumadareye, the others were attacking Tchoma Bangou.

The two villages are located about 120 km north of the capital Niamey, in the Tillabéri region, on the border with Mali and Burkina Faso. The region has been the target of regular attacks in recent years by jihadist groups.

The double attack, announced on Saturday by local elected officials, but without a precise balance, was committed the day the results of the presidential elections were announced. They comfortably led, with 39.33%, Mohamed Bazoum, the party’s power candidate and former Interior Minister, who promised to intensify the fight against jihadist groups.
