The government is making further clarification on the vaccine developed by BioNTech / Pfizer and the case of the nurse in the United States who developed specific symptoms of COVID-19 and tested positive one week after the first dose.
“Currently, in the Romanian and international public space there is news that this news serves to support the thesis of inefficiency, including the uselessness of vaccination,” the Government transmits on the website vaccinare-covid.gov.ro.
Clarifications provided by the Government:
Such cases may occur in the next period, which cannot be interpreted as a failure of vaccination in general, of vaccination with the product developed by BioNTech / Pfizer in particular.
First, as clinical trials show, the immune response to vaccination occurs approximately 10-14 days after the first administration, and the maximum effect (maximum protective response) occurs 7 days after the second administration / boost. This means that a SARS-CoV-2 virus infection can occur after the first dose (which is the news topic), as that period is considered the “immunological window”, that is, the period in which the immune response has not yet occurred.
Another explanation may be that the person reporting the news was, at the time of vaccination, either during the incubation period, or already infected and in an asymptomatic phase.
Also, the proven efficacy of BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine clinical trials is 95%. This means that there are a small number of people who can still develop the disease despite vaccination. However, data from studies shows that protection against severe forms is almost 100%.
Also, as with other vaccines, not especially for COVID-19 vaccines, there are always people who have contraindications to vaccination or people who, due to pre-existing medical conditions (for example, severe immunosuppression) do not develop an optimal immune response. (that is, it does not develop a sufficiently protective immune response). These people, who have contraindications to vaccination or who do not develop an optimal immune response, indirectly benefit from vaccinating other people because, by vaccinating a large number of people and obtaining a vaccine coverage of more than 70%, the circulation of the virus in the community is significantly reduced.
The case of the American nurse who became infected with coronavirus within days of receiving the Pfizer vaccine
Matthew W, a nurse who works at two hospitals, announced on Facebook on December 18 that he had been given the Pfizer vaccine, claiming that his arm hurt for a day after the administration, but there were no other side effects.
Six days later, after working a shift in a Covid-19 ward, the nurse complained of chills, muscle aches and fatigue. He did the coronavirus test, which confirmed he was infected with Covid-19.
