A 45-year-old nurse from California tested positive for Covid-19 about a week after receiving the Pfizer vaccine, an ABC News affiliate reported.
Matthew W, a nurse who works at two hospitals, announced on Facebook on December 18 that he had been given the Pfizer vaccine, telling KGTV that after the administration, his arm hurt for a day, but there were no other side effects.
Six days later, after working a shift in a Covid-19 ward, the nurse complained of chills, muscle aches and fatigue. He did the coronavirus test, which confirmed he was infected with Covid-19.
Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist in San Diego, said the scenario was not unexpected and said that patients did not develop immunity to Covid-19 immediately after vaccination.
What is the explanation of the specialists
“We know from clinical trials of the vaccine that it takes 10 to 14 days to start building immunity from the vaccine,” Ramers said.
Even after 10 to 14 days, patients need a second dose of vaccine for complete protection.
“We think the first dose provides about 50 percent protection, so you need the second dose to reach 95 percent,” added Christian Ramers.
ABC News notes that there is another possibility, given the incubation period of up to 14 days for Covid-19, namely, that Matthew was infected before being vaccinated.
