Colchicine, an anti-inflammatory drug, will be tested as a possible treatment for COVID-19 in a clinical trial in the UK.

In the RECOVERY clinical trial (Randomized Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy), the world’s largest clinical trial testing a range of potential treatments for COVID-19, at least 2,500 patients to receive random colchicine, commonly used as a treatment for gout, transmits Agerpres.

“Colchicine is an attractive drug to be evaluated in the RECOVERY study because it is very well tolerated, inexpensive, and
widely available “
said Professor Peter Horby of the University of Oxford, a clinical trial investigator.

In Romania, a box of 40 1mg colchicine tablets costs around 10 lei.

The scientists behind the clinical study said that inflammation plays an important role in COVID-19 and that treatment with dexamethasone, another anti-inflammatory drug, has already shown that it can reduce the risk of death in the most severe patients.

Earlier this month, the UK clinical trial also looked at aspirin as a possible treatment for COVID-19 to see if it could reduce the risk of blood clots in people diagnosed with the disease.

Other treatments tested in the RECOVERY clinical trial include the common antibiotic azithromycin and Regeneron’s synthetic antibody cocktail, which was used to treat US President Donald Trump’s COVID-19 symptoms.

However, there are no clear conclusions about the effectiveness of colchicine against COVID-19 and it should not be taken without a prescription.
