A 45-year-old nurse from California tested positive for Covid-19 more than a week after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, ABC News said, citing Reuters.

Matthew W., a nurse who works at two local hospitals, wrote on Facebook on December 18 that he had been given the Pfizer vaccine and told the ABC correspondent that his arm had hurt for a whole day, but that he had no other side effects.

Six days later, on Christmas Eve, he felt bad at the end of a tour in a Covid-19 unit. He began to shake, after which his muscles began to ache and he felt tired.

He went to a hospital testing unit and tested positive for Covid-19 the day after Christmas, the source cited by Reuters also reported.

Christian Ramers, an infectious disease expert at the San Diego Family Medicine Center, told ABC News that this scenario is not “unexpected.”

“We know from the clinical testing phase that it takes 10 to 14 days for your body to start developing the protection that the vaccine offers,” Ramers said.

“The first dose, we believe, gives you about 50% protection, after which you have to take the second dose to achieve 95% protection,” the specialist also explained.
