The tense moments that triggered the tragic outcome of the hostage-taking in Onești took place on the balcony of the house. Gheorghe Moroșan and the two workers he had kidnapped were there when a riot broke out after one of the hostages tried to break free and kicked the attacker with his foot. This was the “click,” as authorities called it, and the 68-year-old became angry and stabbed his hostages in just two minutes. He was able to do it so quickly because they were already tied with their hands behind their back and could not defend themselves, Cristian Gheorghe, deputy commissioner of the IGPR Criminal Investigation Department, explained to Digi24.
The first victim, who apparently struck the assailant, was stabbed in the heart, because the front of his body was defenseless.
All these moments happened right under the eyes of the negotiator who had spoken with the aggressor. He sounded the alarm. From below, he saw the commotion created on the balcony, he did not know exactly what happened, but the screams of the victims were heard and the authorities decided to intervene by force.

An operations team was waiting downstairs. She had entered the block through the back door of the block, so as not to be seen by the attacker. His wife was on the fourth floor. The police had learned of her from the assailant. They contacted her and found out that she was supporting her husband.
The metal door of the apartment was broken with a ram, the door gave in a minute and a half, although it was closed with a ladder.
When the police entered the house, they shot, immobilized Gheorghe Moroșan and found the victims stabbed. Resuscitation maneuvers were carried out, without results in the case of one of the victims, who had already died, and the other was transferred to the hospital, where she later died.
Cristian Gheorghe explained that all the ways of entering the apartment were taken into account, including rappelling through the facade of the block, but that the only viable way was to enter through the main door. If the descent had been done by rappelling, it would have meant passing in front of the balcony where Gheorghe Moroșan’s wife and friends were, and they would have announced it.

The commissioner acknowledged that the possibility existed that the hostages could be rescued, since the individual had been brought “in a state of full cooperation” and in dialogue with the police. Meanwhile, when calculating the scenarios, the policemen were careful not to endanger the lives of the victims. They had spoken to one of them by phone and found out that they were immobilized, with their hands tied behind their back, and the attacker threatened to attack them if the police intervened.

Cristian Gheorghe says that at the time of the crisis in Onești an investigation was carried out, the police made a profile of the attacker, they spoke with relatives and acquaintances, but nothing seemed to indicate, not even his threats on Facebook, how violent. However, any individual, at any quiet time, can suffer a “detonation” at some point, the commissioner said. However, Cristian Gheorghe believes that this is an isolated case and says that the population can still trust the police.
The perpetrator of the hostage-taking in Onești, Gheorghe Moroșan, underwent surgery and was in intensive care on Tuesday, but could be transferred to the ward on Wednesday. His wife was arrested for 30 days.
