An accident that took place on a highway in California, between an SUV and a truck loaded with gravel, resulted in 15 deaths and several injuries, writes CNN. There were 27 people in the van, said an official at the hospital where the injured were taken.

The accident occurred when the truck was hit by a gravel-laden truck at an intersection in Imperial County, southern California, near the Mexican border. 14 people died at the scene and another shortly after arriving at the hospital, said Judy Cruz, head of the Guard Room at El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Those who survived are treated in two hospitals in the area, some in the ATI ward.

A California Highway Patrol officer reported that the truck crossed an intersection and went directly into the truck’s path. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
