Beatrice Rancea, director of the Iasi National Opera, and ten other people were placed under judicial control. The measure was taken by the DIICOT prosecutors, in an embezzlement case with an estimated damage of 5 million lei. Beatrice Rancea was questioned after prosecutors searched her home and office at the Opera. Another control took place in the company of the designer Doina Levința.

The accusations that hang over the former artist, who has been in charge of prestigious cultural institutions for ten years – the Bucharest Opera, then that of Ia dei – are: embezzlement, falsification, embezzlement. Basically, accuses DIICOT, the group led by Beatrice Rancea would have paid for fictitious products and services, and the money from the Ministry of Culture in the form of a grant would have been used for personal interest.

“The criminal investigation highlighted that the group’s criminal activity covered, on the one hand, the entire range of acquisitions, and on the other hand, expenses with employees and income were also pointed out,” according to DIICOT.

A year ago, the former Iași Opera accountant publicly accused irregularities in the way the management spent the institution’s funds.

Alice Gogan, former accountant of the Romanian National Opera Iasi, in January 2020: “We bought 7-8 televisions, 25 vacuum cleaners, but we have 5 maids, we bought 28 computers, we are 10-12 people in offices, 500 lights bulbs, 500 lights neon “.

Marius Aftaragaci, Artis Moldova union leader: “We have also filed complaints, there is another report from the Ministry of Culture, it should be made public … There was also a report from the Court of Accounts.”

Investigators also obtained documents from the Ministry of Culture, which announced that it would collaborate with prosecutors in this investigation. Documents from the company of designer Doina Levința were also collected. One of the prosecutors’ clues is that Opera has paid more than actual expenses for the stage costumes sold by the designer.
