The Cluj-Napoca metro is crossed by salt deposits, discovered at great depth, on the established route. Although local authorities are looking for quick fixes, the entire project could be postponed for another 5 years beyond the initial deadline.
In 2027, the people of Cluj should have traveled by metro, in less than 30 minutes, starting from Floresti throughout the city of Cluj-Napoca. However, in what would become the “Pod Ira” station, the specialists who made the measurements found salt deposits, and in order not to completely change the project, the authorities are trying to find solutions.
Emil Boc, Mayor of Cluj-Napoca: “Experts, at this moment they are analyzing all the solutions and they can assure you that there are solutions, 50 years ago man reached the moon, now he has reached Mars, they realize that he will be able to make a meter although he finds a piece of salt in the path “.
In this area, specialists say that there are large deposits of salt. It is exactly the place where the metro would connect with the metropolitan train that will take you to Cluj-Napoca airport.
New studies require additional costs and time. Geologists say the salt deposits should be carefully analyzed before deciding whether to go ahead with the plan or consider another route. Salt excavations are extremely expensive and difficult.
Iulian Popa, professor of geological engineering: “Problems arise in the presence of water. If the water comes into contact with the body of salt, it dissolves and the vacuum evolves over time, giving rise to caverns that can lose their stability. On the surface of the land it generates settlements and in extreme cases collapse ”.
City Council representatives say that every morning, more than 17,000 cars arrive from Floresti to Cluj and the metro could cut traffic in half.
The total value of the project exceeds one billion euros.
