Mihai Chirica, the mayor of Iași, was sent to court today. The Minister of Labor, Raluca Turcan, considers that the mayor supported by the PNL should take a step back.
Raluca Turcan affirms that his position towards Mihai Chirica is the same as he has towards any politician sent to court: “He should, at some point, take a step back from public office, from public dignity”. “I cannot change my mind. Justice must work and public institutions must be a standard of integrity,” added Raluca Turcan, on the TVR 1 program România9.
The minister also stated that “I always look through my own value system and always think about how I would react, God forbid, if I found myself in the same situation.”
Prosecutors accusations. Why Mihai Chirica was sent to court
Mihai Chirica, the current mayor of Iași, has been sued for deeds since he was deputy mayor, deputy mayor of law, accused of abuse of power. Gheorghe Nichita, a former mayor of Iași, is also sent to court in the same case, as well as three other people with leadership positions at the time of the events in state institutions. All are accused of abuse of office, according to the statement from the prosecutor’s office attached to the Iași Court. The five go to court after in 2013 they started a procedure for the illegal purchase of four Skoda cars, through leasing, although it was prohibited for the authorities and public institutions to take charge of the car leasing. The damage caused to the local budget was 503,482.17 lei. Prosecutors point out in the case of the current mayor Mihai Chirica that in the approved specifications for the purchase of the four cars “specific technical specifications of a certain manufacturer and a certain brand, respectively of the Skoda brand, have been inserted.”
