From 20 degrees, Greece suddenly reached negative temperatures of minus 20 degrees. The thermal values would have decreased so much due to the Leandros storm, a climatic phenomenon that stopped the period with warm weather in recent days in the country.
While residents enjoyed warm weather and temperatures above 20 degrees the day before, the city of Florina, located in northern Greece, registered minus 20 degrees on Friday morning, reports DPA, cited by Agerpres. Other regions also recorded temperatures below zero degrees Celsius.
The cold weather front will move south over the weekend, bringing near-freezing temperatures to the capital Athens for the first time in a long time, according to meteorologists, the cited source also writes.
However, higher temperatures are expected over the next week.
Last week, a heat wave with highs of 28 degrees Celsius caused Greeks on Sunday to cross restrictions and go out in large numbers to the beach or parks.
According to the National Observatory of Athens, the temperature in Chania, on the southern island of Crete, reached 28.3 degrees C around noon, one of the highest temperatures recorded in January in the last 50 years. At the time, Hurricane Filomena was causing major problems in Spain, which was facing the heaviest snowfall in decades.
