Former Senate President Calin Popescu-Tariceanu is being prosecuted for DNA in a case in which he is accused of taking bribes worth $ 800,000. To recover the equivalent damage in lei – 3,204,640 lei, the prosecutors seized the real estate that belonged to him.
According to a statement from the National Anti-Corruption Directorate – Anti-Corruption Section assimilated to corruption offenses, prosecutors ordered the criminal investigation against the suspect Călin Constantin Anton Popescu-Tăriceanu, at the time of the writing of the Prime Minister of the Romanian Government, for accepting bribes.
The anti-corruption prosecutors indicate in the ordinance that Tariceanu, as prime minister, would have indirectly received, in the period 2007-2008, from the representatives of an Austrian company, material benefits amounting to USD 800,000, consisting of the payment of consulting services . .
“Instead, it would have exercised its functions so that a series of governmental decisions were adopted in favor of the company. The amount of USD 800,000, which represents a commission on the value of the payments made by the Romanian state to the company, would have been used for the benefit to cover some campaign expenses, being transferred on the basis of fictitious contracts concluded with various offshore companies ”, say the researchers.
According to DNA, this case was established in 2018, after the reunification of three criminal cases, one of which was taken up by DNA prosecutors at the request of the Austrian judicial authorities.
Following the rejection, on June 3, 2019, of the initial request for approval of the criminal investigation by the Senate (institution invested with the solution considering Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu’s status as senator at that time), prosecutors made, in the same file, criminal investigation documents on facts and other people, ”the statement shows.
As a result of the administration of additional tests, there were elements of novelty that delineated the state of affairs mentioned above with reference to the former dignitary, the researchers specify.
“To confiscate the object of the bribery offense, in this case the seizure of insurance on a property belonging to Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu up to the amount of 800,000 USD, equivalent to lei – 3,204,640 lei, was ordered”, they mention.
