US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States was considering sanctions and other restrictions on those involved in arresting more than 50 people in Hong Kong on Wednesday, Reuters reported Thursday, according to Agerpres.

Hong Kong police arrested 53 pro-democracy activists early Wednesday morning as part of the largest mass arrest under the new national security law, a regulatory act imposed by Beijing on the former British concession last June.
Among those arrested was US lawyer John Clancey, said a source from the company where he works.
Pompeo called the arrests “scandalous and illustrative of the Chinese Communist Party’s contempt for its own people and the rule of law.”
“The United States will consider imposing sanctions and other restrictions on all persons and entities involved in carrying out this assault on the people of Hong Kong,” the head of state said.
