No first league team was left in Romania, now almost all remain! Only the FCSB went to Antalya, the others will train at home. The rojiblancos trained last night for the first time in Turkey and will return to Bucharest on January 14, before the match with Astra, starting in the first stage of 2021. The remaining 15 teams are still camped in Romania. The reasons are several: savings, difficult travel conditions, with mandatory Covid tests, very short preparation period.
FCSB wanted to go to Antalya to have a better climate and better training conditions. The other teams have given up such advantages and are preparing at home. However, the time is very short. This has not been the case since Forban, the first stage of this year is scheduled for January 12, so those who would go abroad should now return in a week. Even with transportation, there aren’t enough days left to make the trip worthwhile.
This situation annuls a tradition to which Romanian clubs had adhered, of moving their players abroad both in summer and winter. The usual winter destinations were Turkey, Spain and Cyprus. Since the mid-1990s, Division A teams have always opted abroad for winter training, from the moment the coaches abandoned the old Soviet-inspired program, with mountain camps, with very hard physical training.
The good thing about Romania: the weather suits them
The teams can train in Romania in the coming days, because the temperature will not be scary. For today 11 degrees are estimated, the minimum will be 3 degrees on Friday. The forecast is for rain, not snow, so the terrain must be kept in good condition. In other years, clubs were forced to schedule overseas camps for a long time.
The FCSB were deceived in 2012, they returned to Bucharest too early when they were going to play with Twente in the Europa League, the weather was terrible and the players led by Ilie Stan prepared for a while on a ball that gave way, they had not been able to train due to to the cold and the blizzard. The red-blues were later eliminated by the Dutch, 1-0 in the round, and in exchange for the Enschede band.
FCSB camp costs as much as a salary
The economy is an important criterion by which Romanians have chosen to train at home, in a season when they are still affected by the pandemic. There is no money for tickets, the sponsors are also in crisis. And the cost of the winter camp was not negligible.
FCSB will pay around 50,000 euros to train in Turkey from yesterday until January 14! The amount is considerable in League 1, it is the average annual salary of a soccer player. They are successful teams, like Clinceni and UTA, where 50,000 euros a year means a salary for an important footballer.
