The number of confirmed landslides following the December 30, 2020, landslide in a town near Oslo reached four on Saturday after another body was found under the rubble, authorities announced.
“I discovered a new dead person. It was in the same area as the third body. We took out the two bodies,” a police officer told a news conference.
The search for six other missing persons continued overnight from Saturday to Sunday, reports AFP, taken over by Agerpres. Initially, 10 people were reported missing, including two children aged 2 and 13, respectively.
A large landslide occurred Tuesday night to Wednesday in Ask, in the Gjerdrum municipality, northeast of Oslo, engulfing several houses. Ten people were injured, one of them seriously. Rescuers believe they can still find survivors in the “air pockets” of buildings that are still partially intact.
The canine brigade pointed out several places in the area where rescuers will act. One of the dogs involved in the operations was injured during the search.
Why there was a landslide
About a thousand people who were evacuated as a result of the disaster are no longer able to return to their homes due to the instability of the terrain. The land continued to collapse from Friday night through Saturday.
More than ten houses and 31 cabins collapsed and some houses were moved a distance of 400 meters.
According to the Norwegian Water and Power Directorate (NVE), the landslide affected 350 meters in width and 800 meters in length.
The soil where the landslide occurred has a clay composition, specific to Norway and Sweden. The ground can become fluid and quickly collapse.
Arriving on the scene, Prime Minister Erna Solberg emphasized that this landslide is one of the largest catastrophes ever to occur in her country.
King Harald, his wife, Sonja, and Crown Prince Haakon are expected to be in Gjerdrum on Sunday.
