Thousands of people gathered in the city center for the countdown before entering 2021, Reuters reported.
“Safety is the priority,” said a 23-year-old teacher from Wuhan. “It’s okay because the anti-COVID measures are not very strictly enforced. We can still go out,” added another person. Some partygoers wore masks, others took them off at times and young people flocked to nightclubs, The Sun noted.
In contrast, in Hong Kong, authorities did not organize a New Year’s Eve countdown event on the street. For the first time, the event took place online and the authorities advised people to stay in their homes. However, several groups of people gathered in front of Victoria Harbor to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2021 together.
Some of them symbolically lit some fireworks, but it all lasted a few minutes, local media reported.
