President Klaus Iohannis was received in Chisinau on Tuesday with military honors by his Moldovan counterpart, Maia Sandu.

The President of Romania is the first state leader received by President Maia Sandu. He was greeted with bread and salt.

The reception ceremony included the singing of the national anthems of Romania and the Republic of Moldova and the review of the honor guard.

Several supporters came to the front of the Presidency with flags shouting “Long live the Romanian country”, “Romania has no borders with the Prut” or “Long live Moldova, Transylvania and Wallachia, long live and flourish!”

President Iohannis made them by hand.

The two heads of state hold face-to-face conversations when transmitting this news. Around 1:00 p.m. they will make joint statements.

During the official visit, the two heads of state will address issues related to Romania’s support to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, including in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to support the economic and social development of the Republic of Moldova.

At the same time, the two presidents will adopt a joint declaration aimed at strengthening the bilateral strategic partnership, reaffirming the special relationship between Bucharest and Chisinau on the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Strategic Partnership for European Integration of Moldova in 2020, as well as the commitment of the Republic of Moldova to follow the European path and implement the necessary democratic reforms in this regard.
