Mădălin Miki Lupu, a man from Botoşani County, was definitively sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempted murder. The Galaţi court commuted his sentence to life in prison after the individual had previously been sentenced to 50 years in prison for murder and robbery. The man decided not to challenge the court’s decision and it became final by failing to appeal.
On February 15, 2020, the individual nearly killed another detainee at the Galati Maximum Security Penitentiary, where he is currently incarcerated. The victim’s name is Cătălin Andronache, he is 31 years old and is from Panciu, Vrancea county. He had been incarcerated at the Galaţi Maximum Security Penitentiary in 2012 and was sentenced to 24 years and 6 months in prison for a particularly serious murder.
Investigators determined that, in the midst of a spontaneous conflict, Mădălin Miki Lupu repeatedly hit Andronache with a metal object on the head. The victim had life-threatening traumatic injuries that required 50-55 days of medical attention to heal (head trauma, cervical trauma-multiple right lateral cervical hematomas, right anterior thoracic trauma, osteo-articular trauma).
Tried to escape like a movie
In November 2019, Mădălin Miki Lupu organized a movie-like getaway. At that time, he was a prisoner in the Gherla Penitentiary and thought that he could escape by digging a tunnel in the cell where he was held. To avoid being overheard by supervisors, he turned on the television and turned up the volume, and to avoid forming dust, he watered the wall.
He managed to dig a hole 13 inches deep, with a diameter that would allow him to pass. He only had one more row of bricks and would have managed to break through the wall, but his plan was revealed the same day he would be transferred to Galati Penitentiary for an expert report. He was also charged in this case with attempted escape and destruction.
Rape at age 18, robbery and murder in his hometown
The Botosani man first arrived in jail the same year he turned 18. He then raped a woman and sentenced her to five years in prison. In 2017, after his release, the man stayed for a time in Resita, where he beat a local. Realizing that he could return to jail, he tried to return to the Coţuşca commune, where he is from.
On the way he stopped at Alba Iulia, where he killed a woman and beat her son to steal them. No one suspected then who the perpetrator of the crime was, but then Mădălin Miki Lupu arrived in his native commune, where he robbed and killed a local woman for 90 lei. Captured by the Botosani police, the young man admitted everything, including the crime in Alba Iulia, which had an unknown author.
