Future US President Joe Biden warned Saturday of “devastating consequences” for millions of Americans in distress if Donald Trump does not sign, as he threatened, the vast economic recovery plan adopted by Congress, reports AFP, cited by Agerpres.
After months of debate, US lawmakers adopted an economic support plan of about $ 900 billion on Thursday, but Donald Trump rejected it, calling, among other things, for an increase in direct aid to the poorest families.
“This resignation has devastating consequences,” Biden warned, citing the expiration of unemployment benefits for 10 million people since Saturday and the end of current state funding for services on December 28.
“This bill is fundamental, it must be signed to take effect immediately,” the Democratic president said in a statement, highlighting “the economic devastation caused by COVID-19.”
But the Republican billionaire is currently refusing to ratify the text. He estimates that the roughly $ 600 provided for the lowest income earners, an amount approved by his finance secretary during negotiations with Congress, is insufficient and asks that that amount be increased to $ 2,000 per adult.
Democrats, in favor of increased aid, tried to vote on an amendment in the House of Representatives on Thursday, but it was blocked by the Republican minority.
A presidential veto would have disastrous effects for millions of Americans, especially those in the hospitality and air travel sectors, facing new restrictions to curb COVID-19 pollution. The latest government aid, adopted in the spring within the framework of the gigantic support plan of 2.2 billion dollars in the face of economic losses caused by the pandemic, expires this Saturday.
