Romanian President Klaus Iohannis appointed Defense Minister Nicolae Ciucă as interim prime minister on Monday night after the head of government Ludovic Orban announced his resignation.
The President of Romania took note of the resignation of Ludovic Orban as Prime Minister of Romania and appointed Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă as Interim Prime Minister, in order to fulfill the powers of the Prime Minister until the formation of the new government, reports a statement from the Presidential Administration.
During Monday, after Klaus Iohannis called Ludovic Orban to a private discussion at the Cotroceni Palace, the party leaders advanced the name of Ilie Bolojan, the current president of the Bihor City Council, the name of the Minister of Defense, Nicolae Ciucă , but also the Minister of Finance, Florin Cîțu, for the position of Prime Minister.
Defense Minister Nicolae Ciucă joined the NLP in October and stood in parliamentary elections for a Senate seat.
The former Chief of Staff, General Nicolae Ciuca, asked to be transferred to the reserve last year, when he was proposed to occupy the post of Defense Minister, as NATO standards require that this position be filled by a civilian.
