After an agreement was reached with Dan Petrescu for the termination of the contract, several names of coaches were circulated for his replacement, but the management made a surprising decision.
Dan Petrescu gave up the position of coach of CFR Cluj, after winning the title in the last three seasons of League 1, managing to qualify the team in two consecutive editions in the groups of the Europa League. But, in recent months, there has been a wear and tear in the manager’s relationship with the club’s players and managers, the manager complaining about the quality of the team and the lack of constant investment in transfers, while the players began to feel the harshness of the coach’s speech, but also Spartan training methods, and the leaders found that they could no longer sustain Petrescu’s remuneration, considered immense for League 1 level.
In recent days, several important names have circulated for his replacement, among them those of Adrian Mutu, Edi Iordanescu, Vasile Miriuta, Cosmin Contra, Mircea Rednic, Jorge Costa, Dusan Uhrin, Victor Piturca, Paulo Duarte and Laszlo Balint. , but either they could not break the current commitments, or they were not liked by the dressing room and management, or they put conditions considered too harsh, or they reached agreements with other clubs. Also, some did not want to take over the leadership of the team now, just a few weeks before the end of the matches in 2020, with major matches on the horizon (TSKA Sofia and Young Boys – in Europa League / Poli Iasi, FCSB, Dinamo, Craiova – in League 1), which could ruin the calculations for the whole season, while the management considered the period too short to find a quality coach, in the conditions desired by the club’s leaders.
According to information from Sport.ro, Dan Petrescu’s squad will be on the bench for the remaining six games to be played this year. The team will be managed until the end of 2020 by coaches Valeriu Bordeanu (UEFA PRO license), Costin Curelea (UEFA A license), Cristian Moldovan (goalkeeping coach), Cristian Dragota and Bogdan Aldea (physical trainers), experienced team players. to be used to effectively control the wardrobe. The team also prepared in this formula, at the end of the last championship, when “Bursucul” was infected with coronavirus, even in the decisive matches to defend the title of champion of League 1, in the victories with FCSB (2-0) and CSU Craiova (3-1), when a pitch was observed against the very tactical game imposed by Petrescu.
As, at the end of this year, Petrescu accused a state of mental exhaustion and minor health problems, being more and more irascible and with an increasingly radical speech, the management of CFR Cluj hopes that, by keeping its collaborators for the remaining matches, have the interpersonal relationships, discipline and professionalism of his staff, without the additional pressure exerted on the players by what is considered the toughest Romanian coach. Likewise, the management considers that much of the good work of the last three seasons was the result of a collective effort, not exclusively of Petrescu. In addition, Petrescu’s staff does not lose a possible commitment of money, since Petrescu announced that he needs a month of rest, to be with his family during the holidays and recharge his batteries, only then being available to sign. a contract with a team from the Arab countries, which gave him an extremely advantageous understanding from the financial point of view.
