Carried by United Airlines, the Pfizer vaccine has begun shipping to various destinations in Europe, from where it can be distributed.
Vaccine approvals in the EU are expected in the second half of December from the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
The decision to bring the vaccine to the mainland has already been made so that its distribution can be made as soon as possible after receiving approvals, writes the Wall Street Journal.
United will operate flights between Chicago and Brussels as the main vaccine development labs are located in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Puurs, Belgium, but also in Pleasant Prairie, Wis. And Karlsruhe (Germany).
The vaccine was transported under different conditions, requiring a huge amount of dry ice. All this is due to the fact that the doses of the vaccine must be kept at -75 degrees Celsius.
United Airlines received special approval to load the plane with five times the amount of dry ice. So distribution to buyers will be a challenge. Other airlines are already making plans to transport the vaccine when needed.
The vaccine is 95% effective and requires a two-dose vaccination at approximately 20 days.
