President Klaus Iohannis accused the PSD on Tuesday night of “being the main culprit” for the fact that Romania “entered an unprecedented health crisis completely unawares” and claimed that, in the December 6 elections, ” the elimination of the PSD from the power buttons may finally be definitive ”.“Let us never forget that, three decades after the 1989 Revolution, Romania entered an unprecedented health crisis. The Social Democratic Party is the main culprit for this disaster and this must be made clear. I have a duty to all Romanians, regardless of their political options, to say things by name, because the stakes are huge: the fate of the Romania of tomorrow, “said Iohannis, in a press release at the Cotroceni Palace.

Iohannis announced this Monday, after a meeting with the Ministers of Defense, Interior and Health, on the topic “Vaccination campaign against COVID-19, a matter of national security”, that the Vaccination Strategy against COVID will be submitted for approval in a meeting of the CSAT. which will convene in the next period.

Statement from President Iohannis (source – Presidential Administration)

  • A year has passed since the presidential elections, a year since my second term as President of Romania, a year that was destined to build Normal Romania, a project for which the citizens gave me their trust and vote.
  • Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic, which has radically and brutally affected the lives of people around the world, has not missed us either.
  • Thus, during this year, my efforts and those of the NLP Government have focused in particular on combating the COVID-19 epidemic and reducing the negative effects it has generated on a social, educational and economic level.
  • Let us never forget that, three decades after the 1989 Revolution, Romania entered an unprecedented health crisis.
  • The Social Democratic Party is the main culprit for this disaster and this must be made clear.
  • I have a duty to all Romanians, regardless of their political choices, to say things by name, because the stakes are huge: the fate of Romania tomorrow.
  • Our country has been severely affected for years by the corruption and incompetence of the PSD governments, which blocked development, did not invest in infrastructure, and directed public funds to the party’s clients. No reform was carried out to the end in Romania, no reform that was really wanted escaped the PSD unscathed.
  • True priorities were ignored and abandoned so we find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic with major deficiencies in the medical system, poor infrastructure, and a critically challenged education system.
  • The clientelism promoted at the level of state policy and indifference to acute systemic problems have brought Romania to the point where the state was in danger of not being able to fulfill its fundamental mission: to protect the health and rights of citizens.
  • In such an unfortunate and extremely difficult context, only one party assumed responsibility for governing the country, while many others preferred not to get involved. It was not easy at all, but even with a minority government of the PNL, attacked from all sides and without parliamentary support, many things have changed for the better.
  • Parallel to the enormous efforts to manage the epidemic, with the limited resources available, we have embarked, in close collaboration with the Government, on important reforms that must be continued and deepened.
  • Across the board, decisions are now made after consulting experts and specialists, we have an excellent relationship with European partners, and Romania has been removed from the shame list in which we include PSD, that of countries with problems in matters of Justice. and the rule of law.
  • We also obtained the largest European financing package in history, funds that will start the engine of reconstruction in Romania and allow us to emerge from the economic crisis as soon as possible, to consistently develop infrastructure and all important public sectors .
  • A scenario in which PSD has been in power throughout this entire period is inconceivable. We can easily imagine the health catastrophe we would have reached with a PSD government, which failed miserably at all levels and under normal conditions, when we did not have to face a pandemic.
  • The vote on December 6 is essential, because Romania can no longer afford an electoral cycle of underdevelopment. Too many generations have been sacrificed and too often people’s sacrifices and patience have been in vain.
  • PSD has shown that it cannot change. Despite attempts to embellish its image, the same retrograde formation of the red barons remains, dependent on a way of doing politics that the citizens no longer tolerate or want.
  • What better proof that the PSD has understood nothing and that it is acting strictly in the interests of the party than the permanent weakening of any government effort to control the pandemic in Parliament?
  • How can the attitude of the PSD to overload the state budget with all kinds of electoral gifts be cynical and irresponsible, as well as cynical and irresponsible, even though the PSD deputies know very well that there is simply no money for such measures?
  • Or another relevant example: while Romanians and the government are fighting the pandemic and its economic effects, the PSD is still trying to approve tax breaks for areas such as casinos and gambling. This is how a harmful party in Parliament acts, which only thinks of the benefit and the needs of the people!
  • Well, this has to end!
  • Dear Romanians,
  • On December 6, the removal of the Power Buttons PSD can finally be final! It is time for us, united, the citizens of this nation and the reforming political forces, together with me, to enter a new stage of development of our country. It’s time to build Normal Romania!
  • We have big projects to accomplish in underserved areas for years and years in a row. Health and education are a priority, all the more so since the challenges posed by the pandemic have shown us the seriousness of the shortcomings we face. At the same time, restoring justice laws on a constitutional basis and accelerating the fight against corruption, removing barons from the administration and reforming the administration, introducing two-round voting for mayors and implementing a green development agenda and Sustainable must become a reality.
  • Some of these projects have already been prepared by the NLP Government, but none of them have been able to advance in Parliament due to this permanent obstacle to development that is the PSD.
  • As, in addition, the PSD also refused to sign the National Political Agreement for the consolidation of Romania’s European path, which we initiated last year, an agreement that also includes the transposition into law of the prohibition of the two much-loved topics by the PSD, the amnesty and pardon for corruption and adoption by the Government of emergency ordinances in the field of justice. But with a new reforming majority, we will be able to implement the will of the Romanians and guarantee the criteria of integrity in public office.
  • The referendum for justice and the presidential elections last year paved the way for a normal Romania.
  • But if we do not take the decisive step now, in the parliamentary elections on December 6, all our joint efforts and all the struggle in recent years to defend democracy will be in vain.
  • Only with a right-wing government, around the PNL, with a solid majority in Parliament, will we be able to continue the changes that have already begun this year and make the major reforms planned.
  • In 2016, Romania entered one of the darkest periods in its recent history. The consequences would have been dramatic for the future of our country if the citizens, the few democratic parties and I had not opposed with all our might.
  • On December 6 we must leave this nightmare behind.
  • I am still one hundred percent involved so that the project I was chosen with, Normal Romania, takes shape. I assure you that I will work with the future government, which I see formed around NLP, to turn this vision into reality.
  • The PNL is the party that, at the end of last year, had the courage to assume a government knowing that it is taking over a depleted budget and an administration in which the PSD has placed many incompetent.
  • Even so, once faced with the unexpected health crisis, we find, together with NLP, resources and solutions to deal well with this terrible pandemic.
  • Of course, there is still a lot to correct, of course mistakes have been made, they are inevitable for anyone who takes work seriously. But what matters is the decision to fundamentally reestablish the difficult way the state works.
  • Romania has the opportunity to take advantage of post-pandemic opportunities to recover economically and socially.
  • We carry out real reforms together, not separately, because our strength lies in the common values that unite us.
  • I am determined to lead this vast project of national reconstruction together with all the partners who in these years have shown me that they are totally dedicated to the same vision of development as me and I am convinced that in four years from now we will see the new face dignified, prosperous and democratic Romania.
  • Thank you and good health.
