Ciprian Tătărușanu retired from the national team

I started seriously thinking about when I retired from the national team earlier this year. Until I was 34 years old, I played for more than a decade for Romania, with honor and pride, every time grateful to be called up and to be able to sing the anthem with the most important jersey for me. The shirt that he dreamed of playing with since he was a child.

I will soon be 35 years old, so in recent months my conviction has strengthened that it is time to make this decision. I had a very good relationship with all the Romanian coaches in these 11 years and with all the members of the coaching staff, so any speculation related to other alleged reasons other than the ones I share with you has no place. I was called up, played, defended for Romania and in this special mission I put everything I had of the best as a footballer.

I just think it’s time for other Romanian goalkeepers to catch up, defend the national team’s goal and I took a step back. We have young goalkeepers with great perspective, we have experienced goalkeepers who can take on this role at any time. One cycle has come to an end, with the end of the EURO qualifying round and the latest edition of the Nations League, and another cycle begins, with the World Cup preliminaries scheduled for spring. So I think this is the best time for my beautiful history in the national team to end.

I want to thank all the fans, coaches, members of the coaching staff, the Romanian Football Federation, the administrative and medical staff, with whom I worked and from whom I learned a lot.

Perhaps my way of being was not always what the public and journalists expected, but I am certain that this way of being mattered a lot on the field, where I had the most important responsibility, that of defending Romania’s gate.

I am happy for 11 beautiful years and I assure you that I have always been proud to play for Romania, giving everything for my team.

Being the captain of Romania was the most beautiful thing of my career for me. Thank you!”, Shown in a letter to Ciprian Tătărușanu, published by FRF.ro.

Professional milestones of the national team

Ciprian Tătărușanu made his senior debut on November 17, 2010, 10 years and two days ago, in a friendly match with Italy, which ended 1-1, with Răzvan Lucescu on Romania’s technical bench.

They followed another 72 games in the goal of the “tricolor”, three of which in a final phase, Euro 2016, when it was integral with France, 1-2, Switzerland, 1-1 and Albania, 0-1.

With 73 games played for Romania, Ciprian Tătărușanu is 17th in the national team’s all-time ranking, tied with former coach Cosmin Contra.

The second goalkeeper to retire in recent months

Ciprian Tătărușanu is the second goalkeeper to choose to retire from the national team this fall.

In September, shortly after the first action with coach Mirel Rădoi, Silviu Lung, legitimized at Kayserispor, announced that he decided to end his career with the national team.
