President Klaus Iohannis said on Wednesday, after a meeting attended by representatives of the medical system, that problems related to hospital equipment had been identified and a number of solutions had been proposed. The president said that in the next period there will be a modernization of gas systems, especially oxygen, in hospitals, but also of electrical infrastructure. Solutions are also being sought to ensure optimal equipment maintenance.
“Today we had a very technical and applied discussion on a field of great importance, but often neglected. I am referring to the area of medical equipment and electrical networks in public hospitals. We address its form of maintenance, an essential aspect in an age like today, of great pressure on the medical system.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Government, but also experts, doctors and medical engineers, just to seek the best solutions to existing problems.
During this meeting, the specialists presented a national diagnosis of the infrastructure of the gas network in the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Units of public hospitals, which, as we know, are overloaded by the large number of severe cases of COVID- 19 that need to be taken care of. to manage them.
I was also presented with an analysis of the dysfunctions and dysfunctions that can occur during the operation of these devices, with specific examples of the different hospitals in the country that have intensive care units or compartments.
To get a more accurate picture of the current situation, we asked the Ministry of Health and experts to analyze the contracts for the service and maintenance of medical equipment and devices in public hospitals. It is obvious that, in a position to provide the necessary drugs, sanitary materials and cover the salary expenses, the funds for the service and maintenance of the equipment are enormously under-dimensioned and, often, insufficient.
Today’s discussion was extremely useful and some concrete solutions have already been identified, which will be assumed by the authorities and implemented.
First of all, it is necessary to modernize medical gas systems, especially oxygen and electrical networks. Here we find together the solution of preparing a well-developed financing program, using European funds, a very valuable and useful resource for the development of the Romanian medical system.
Secondly, it is necessary to rethink the legislative and financial instruments that would allow support for the service system and maintenance of hospital equipment. Human resources play an important role and when I say this I am thinking of medical engineers, who need to be capitalized and more involved in the operation of the hospital.
These issues will be included in the package of laws on health reform, which is being drafted by the Ministry of Health.
We are going through an extremely difficult period for our medical system, which has highlighted all neglected structural deficiencies for years and years. Precisely because we have encountered so many problems, we have been working for several weeks on a coherent vision in this field, which must be transposed into clear laws and regulations.
Together with the Government, I am determined to do what was really not done in Romania after 1989, that is, rebuild the entire healthcare system from scratch. It will be a long-term effort, which, however, cannot be postponed and which must begin as soon as we have a new majority in Parliament, responsible and fully committed to the good of Romanians.
Thank you and I wish you good health! Klaus Iohannis said.
