Cristian Pomohaci was accused of tax evasion after the sex scandal of 2017. During the investigations in the case in which Pomohaci was accused of sexual corruption of minors, the prosecutors of the Attorney General’s Office would also discover irregularities regarding his impressive fortune.
Pomohaci owned, at that time, no less than 40 properties, of which 25 apartments (in Cluj Napoca, Sibiu, Baia Mare, Târgu Mureş, etc.), nine building plots, five land plots and a garage.
For years, Cristian Pomohaci was one of the most sought-after singers on the market, being present at the parties organized on the occasion of the days of towns throughout the country, the rates charged by him amount to several thousand euros per concert. Hundreds of shows over the years, Cristian Pomohaci has invested in real estate.
After the checks, the prosecutors discovered that the singer-priest had been renting the apartments for several years, but did not declare all the profits obtained to the Treasury.
From the evidence provided during the criminal investigation, it appears that the income obtained from the transfer of the use of the 11 buildings, corresponding to the period January 2012 – October 2017, was 1,066,099 lei, the equivalent of 238,345 euros, income whose total amount 189,633 lei is owed to the consolidated state budget, of which 156,618 lei income tax, and the amount of 33,015 lei contribution to social health insurance. From the test administered, it is also clear that the income declared by the defendant to the fiscal bodies, related to the 11 properties and the period previously indicated, amounted to 381,612 lei (equivalent to 85,462 euros) for which taxes were calculated and paid to the budget of the state for a total amount of 53,061 lei, of which 41,931 lei represent income tax and 11,130 lei represent the contribution of social health insurance ”, explained the prosecutors of the Attorney General’s Office.
He fully acknowledged the allegations.
Practically, Cristian Pomohaci did not declare to the tax authorities the amount of 684,487 lei (the equivalent of 152,883 euros), causing a loss of 136,572 lei.
Faced with the fact, the former priest fully acknowledged the accusations, requesting the conclusion of a plea agreement after paying all the damages. Prosecutors have sentenced him to one year in prison with suspension and a series of obligations. The recognition agreement was validated by the Mureş Court since March this year, but the former priest challenged the decision. The former priest did not agree with the obligation not to leave the country without the approval of the court, so he asked that this prohibition be lifted. Pomohaci considered this obligation exaggerated, invoking that the crime against him is economic, the damage was paid in full, he has no criminal record, he collaborated with the criminal investigation bodies, acknowledging his facts. The Mureş Court of Appeal admitted Cristian Pomohaci’s appeal, eliminating the obligation not to leave the country from the sentence. The punishment was unchanged.
Served after the sex scandal
Cristian Pomohaci, a former parish priest from Moşuni village, Mureş county, was catartized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2017, after the major scandal that erupted after a press release in which he tried to sexually corrupt a 17-year-old teenager. The public prosecutor attached to the Târgu Mureş Court opened a criminal case in the summer of 2017, accusing Pomohaci of the crime of recruiting minors for sexual purposes. The prosecutor’s office attached to the Superior Court of Cassation and Justice took over the case, but at the beginning of 2019 the prosecutors ordered the solution of dismissal, arguing that the facts prescribe, the time elapsed since its commission is more than ten years .
Despite the great scandal in which he was involved, the former Moşuni priest continued to enjoy popularity, especially among the elderly. Pomohaci continued to take the stage, being invited to publicly funded events.
