According to the latest decision made by the National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC), all bakery products must be packaged or there must be a dedicated vendor to serve customers.
The order refers to the sale of bread and bakery products in bulk in the country. The reason? Unpackaged bread could be a source of transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
The new rules were sent to the European Commission for approval this week.
Therefore, bakers who take fresh bread out of the oven could be replaced by industrial machines, which package the bags directly in plastic or paper bags.
The Consumer Protection Authority comes with other rules
“With this order we try to eliminate self-service from consumers with bread that does not come prepackaged and we also oblige professionals to inform consumers in the most precise, complete and precise way possible about those substances or products that can cause allergies,” he said. Eduardt Cozminschi, president of ANPC. .
Depending on the response of the Brussels experts, the rules will enter into force 30 days after their publication in the Official Gazette.
ROMPARM’s president affirms that bread is not a vector of disease transmission
In September, when the project entered public debate, Paul Anghel, president of ROMPAN, stated that there was no evidence that the Sars-Cov-2 virus is transmitted through food consumption, and the preliminary results of a study conducted at the respect. from the University of Bucharest contradict the statements of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
In this context, the president of the Association of Romanian Employers of the Milling, Bakery and Flour Products Industry – ROMPAN, Aurel Popescu, stated that bakery and bakery products manufactured and marketed by economic agents in Romania are not a vector of transmission of coronavirus.
In his opinion, the appearance of “totally false” information about the possibility of transmitting the virus through bread raises the suspicion that there are other interests related to the increase in sales of packaged bread and especially imported bakery products.
