Millions of Britons have had to comply with strict local restrictions on Friday to combat the new wave of the COVID-19 epidemic, with Wales entering a new lockdown, reports AFP.

The United Kingdom, one of the countries most mourned by the pandemic, with more than 44,000 deaths, is reacting to the accelerated spread of the virus through localized measures, as local governments have the task of taking such measures, writes agerpres.ro.

Starting Friday at 18:00 local time, the more than three million inhabitants of Wales will have to “stay at home” until 9 November, becoming the first British province to return to isolation. All non-essential shopping centers will be closed, but elementary and middle school students will return to school in early November after the holidays.

In England, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government is trying to avoid imposing blanket isolation, but some 29 million people, about half the population, are subject to various local restrictions.

The city of Manchester, in the northwest of England, exceeded the maximum level of health alert on Friday, after several days of fruitless disputes between the government and local authorities over financial compensation. The city’s 2.8 million residents are no longer able to visit different homes, with rare exceptions, while non-food bars and pubs are closed.

The same restrictions apply from Saturday in the South Yorkshire region, which has around 7.3 million inhabitants.

A five-tier alert system will be established in Scotland, similar to that in England. A Scottish medical official, Jason Leitch, has warned the inhabitants of this province to prepare this year for a possible “Christmas online”, in case of restrictions in the encounters between family and friends.

Interviewed by the BBC, he mentioned that it is still too early to say how many households will be able to meet during the winter holidays, but he believes that in no case will this year be a “normal Christmas”.
