Prosecutors from the National Anticorruption Directorate announced on Tuesday the placing under judicial control for a period of 60 days, of the Eforie police chief, Gabrie Cornel Coteanu, accused of committing crimes of bribery and incitement to abuse of power.

According to DNA, the Eforie Police Chief received 300 lei a day to allow street vendors to trade in the city and on the resort’s beaches.

“Between July-August 2019 and July-August 2020, as commander of the City of Eforie Police, with the rank of chief commissioner, the accused Coteanu Cornel Gabriel would have repeatedly and periodically received, from a person without specialty, co-defendant, sums of money, so that instead it does not comply with its service duties, in the sense of allowing and protecting the development of some clandestine commercial activities in the Eforie Resort of Constanta County. It would be the tolerance of some clandestine commercial activities / not authorized that can take place without the application of misconduct and without confiscation of property, especially on the beaches of the Eforie spa.

From the evidence administered, it appears that the amount received as a bribe would have been 300 lei / day, the shipment being made every few days, mainly on Monday and Thursday of each week, in the vicinity of the Eforie city police headquarters.

In turn, the co-defendant, who periodically gave the money to the commander of the Eforie Municipal Police, repeatedly collected it from people interested in obtaining protection for clandestine commercial activities. The person also sued and received money for alleged information on the controls carried out by the authorities ”, is shown in a statement from ADN.

On the other hand, according to ADN, on August 10, 2020, the accused Coteanu Cornel Gabriel allegedly asked an investigating agent to replace the measure of the 1,000 lei fine applied to a person, for traffic offenses, for the sanction of reprimand, measure that only the court could order.
