The Orban government remains in power, although the PSD tried to overthrow it on Monday with a vote of no confidence. The Social Democrats found themselves in the absurd situation of not gathering enough parliamentarians in the room for the motion to be voted.
Due to lack of a quorum, it was postponed. “Ludovic Orban clings to power and buys the parliamentarians to pieces,” the PSD justified its failure. This while supporters of the motion from other parties accused the leader of the PNL of counting Marcel Ciolacu, the social leader of the Democrats.
For PSD, this announcement confirmed the flaw. Party leaders were unable to gather 233 parliamentarians in the hall the minimum number they needed to debate and vote on the motion of no confidence. A week ago, PSD said that it had 250 deputies by its side.
Marcel Ciolacu, president of PSD: “It was a strategy not to have a quorum, not to vote a motion. I told them that if a motion is voted, there will be 250 votes. Today there was no vote on the motion.”
Five PSD parliamentarians were absent from the assembled plenary: former Interior Minister Carmen Dan, MP Cătălin Rădulescu, also called Mitraliera, and three elected officials who did not answer their colleagues’ phones. For this reason, the PSD accused the head of the Government of having bought them with promises.
Marcel Ciolacu, president of PSD: I will propose to the National Political Committee the exclusion of 3.
Journalist: What if they are sick?
Marcel Ciolacu: Nobody is sick.
Ludovic Orban, Prime Minister of Romania: “I want to thank the political parties that were with us and shared our vote. If you see the number of voters, even if all the parliamentarians were present, there would be no quorum.”
PNL, USR and UDMR announced that they are not voting on the motion. Instead, Victor Ponta’s party together with Călin Popescu Tăriceanu’s party said they will guarantee the minimum number of votes necessary for the removal of the government. Before the meeting began, Víctor Ponta accused Marcel Ciolacu of having hidden agreements with NLP.
Ludovic Orban: “If you shout that it’s a hob, what a hob, if they made a motion, they called people to vote, but they didn’t get it”
Due to the fact that the initiative began during the extraordinary session and as of tomorrow the elected will go back to work in the ordinary session, the voting of this motion of censure cannot be rescheduled. However, PSD leaders would plan, according to some political sources, to attempt to overthrow the government again this fall with a new motion of no confidence.
